Spenser Dalton '12 Vouches for New UNC Basketball Coach

No less an authority than the only Greenie to ever play basketball for the University of North Carolina believes the Tar Heels are in good hands with Hubert Davis.

UNC made national headlines when it promoted Davis from assistant to head coach in April. So far, so good. The team is off to an 8-2 start to this season.

The Christ School connection to Davis occurred when he was UNC’s junior varsity coach from 2013-19 and interacted with alumnus Spenser Dalton ’12. Spenser was a guard who worked his way up from the JV to the varsity.

“I was close with Coach Davis and I can tell you he is a really passionate guy,” Spenser said.

“Not just about basketball, but family, friends, faith, and living life to the fullest. He is about the most passionate guy I’ve ever met. He played for Coach (Dean) Smith and had a great NBA career and later spent time in the media booth, so Coach Davis just has a lot of stories. I think the continuity is a good thing. He’s got all of the playing experience from Carolina and being an assistant under Coach (Roy) Williams was a great way for him to see what it’s like.”

Spenser prefers the golf course to playing pickup games these days. And the North Carolina native is happy that his professional life has led him back to the Tar Heel state.

Spenser graduated from UNC in 2016 with a B.A. in Economics and is presently working for a company out of the Raleigh area where his tasks involve clinical research, writing business proposals, and putting together budgets.
