Baseball is the oldest sport at Christ School. Historical records show that a team came together quickly after the official opening of school on September 30, 1901. Three weeks to be exact, even though there were only 20 students at the time.
And in all these years since, something happened Wednesday for the first time or one of the few times ever.
Sophomore shortstop Corbin Spilliards ’27 homered in his first two plate appearances – from the left side and then the right side – in the Greenies’ 20-0 shutout of visiting Asheville Christian Academy.
Corbin’s two trips around the bases resulted in a career-high seven RBIs and Christ School (5-10-1, 1-0) had 12 hits as a team in its first Carolinas Athletic Association game of the season. Starting pitcher Garin Gosnell ’28 threw four hitless innings – the game only went five – and homered in his first at bat. Leadoff Will Ray ‘27 was 1-for-3 with a double and two walks.
The Lions (5-8, 0-3) gave up 10 runs in the third inning and cycled through four different pitchers.
Christ School’s next game is Friday at SouthLake Christian Academy (6-6) at 4:30 p.m.
