Christ School varsity basketball can attribute a three-game winning streak to any number of things.
Whatever the explanation, the defending Carolinas Athletic Association champions are clicking on the verge of conference play.
De’Ante Green ‘22 was unstoppable for the resurgent Greenies on Saturday, slashing to the basket but also scoring half of his 24 points from three-point range. Justice Ajogbor ’20 added 17 points, while Adam Keever ’20 (17) and Drew Redmond ’21 (16) combined for 33 points in an 81-58 home win over New Faith Christian Academy (Ga.).
“That’s a good team we just beat,” Adam said. “We played up to our (capabilities).”
Christ School begins the CAA portion of its schedule Tuesday night at Asheville Christian Academy. Along with increased confidence, the Greenies are moving the ball better than ever and tapping into their chemistry. Drew said that the preseason was hard – sometimes the team had as few as eight players for workouts – and then there was a difficult early season schedule that battle-tested Christ School.
“We feel good about each other right now and our confidence is way up after a game like this,” Drew said. “We have to come out (Tuesday) the same way because they are going to be ready for us.”
Tuesday’s game tips off at 7:30 p.m. in Swannanoa. ACA won two of the three meetings versus Christ School last season, losing last February’s CAA championship game on its home court, 65-53.
The Greenies have some good momentum for the rivalry game after by far the easiest of their three consecutive wins. De’Ante registered 16 of his points by halftime Saturday, pushing Christ School out to a 29-8 lead after the conclusion of the first quarter and a 47-21 advantage at the midway point.
New Faith Christian (9-5) closed the gap to the mid-teens several times but could get no closer. Charlie Browder ’21 (five points) and Jack Britts ’22 (two) were the two other scorers for the Greenies.
