Friday was a nothing kind of night for Christ School opponents.
Three wins, three shutouts.
All the deception and misdirection of East Burke’s quirky Wing-T offense never manifested itself Friday in Connelly Springs, N.C. Instead, senior linebacker Jordan Edgecomb ’25 recovered two first-half fumbles – including one he took to the house – and varsity football won its first season opener in five years, 26-0.
Jackson Cancel ’26 rushed for two short touchdowns (1 and 5 yards) and quarterback Mason Holtzclaw ‘27 accounted for the final TD – a 7-yard keeper at the 7:53 mark of the fourth quarter.
Sky Liu ‘26 was the defender who set up Jordan’s touchdown by ripping the ball out. Eshoi Ewers ‘26 and Cooper Kirby '26 made interceptions.
Pre-snap penalties dogged the Greenies (1-0) all night, but otherwise they kept East Burke (0-1) bogged down in its own territory for most of the game.
“Good to get a shutout, but it was sloppy,” Coach Chad Walker said.
“We had 10 offsides penalties on defense and we’ve got to be a lot more disciplined than that. We played well when the ball was snapped, but we’ve got to take care of those penalties. It was good to see where we’re at and now we know what we need to fix ahead of a big conference game (next week at home versus Rabun Gap).”
VARSITY SOCCER 2, CANNON SCHOOL 0
Wyatt Haddock ‘27 and Taz Kasambara ’26 scored their first varsity goals and Felix Huebner ’26 – who has given up only two goals in three games – came away with the clean sheet Friday at home.
JV SOCCER 2, CANNON SCHOOL 0
Henry Tutera ‘28 scored both goals for the JV Greenies in their first win of the season. Max Rodriguez ’29 was the goalkeeper for the shutout.
Soccer is back home Tuesday for a doubleheader vs. Charlotte Country Day (JV at 4 p.m., varsity at 5:30).
