Two Games, Two Wins, No Goals Allowed by Greenies

Carson Campbell '21 scored the game-winning goal for Christ School on Friday.

Outside of his studies at Christ School, Michael Mahoney ’20 has shown an interest in the real estate profession. The senior is sure covering a lot of ground for an undefeated soccer team.

Mahoney turned back eight shots Friday and has yet to be scored on as a starting varsity goalkeeper. And following 91 minutes of scoreless play, the Greenies (2-0-0) broke through on a set piece installed earlier in the day to beat visiting Charlotte Christian in overtime, 1-0. Carson Campbell ’21 did the honors – his second goal of a young season was a missile after settling the ball at the top of the 18-yard box. Fellow junior Fox Smith ’21 was credited with the assist.

“Beating Christian isn’t something that surprised me today,” Christ School coach Guy Campbell ’00 said.

“It was the constant hustle and work rate that our guys showed today. When a group works that hard for a full 80 minutes of regulation and 12 minutes of overtime, they will most likely be successful. The effort the guys showed after less than 24 hours rest from the Providence Day game (a 2-0 home win on Thursday) showed how mature this group is. Another veteran win for the Greenies.”

Campbell said that every player nailed their assignment on the set piece. He is impressed by the improvement that the Knights (0-1-0) have made the past two years. Charlotte Christian beat Christ School in 2018, as did Providence Day.

The start of Friday’s game was delayed nearly 90 minutes by lightning strikes in the Asheville area. Campbell and the Greenies always challenge themselves early, and this is the program's first 2-0-0 start to a season since 2014.

With two huge NCISAA 4-A wins under its belt, Christ School will hit the road Wednesday for its Carolinas Athletic Association opener at Carolina Day. Kickoff time is 4:30 p.m.
