Spring Break promises to be eventful for Christ School varsity baseball. Especially if Saturday’s 11-3 road win at Charlotte Country Day is a sign of things to come.
Garrett Clapsaddle ‘21 went 3-for-3 with a home run, a pair of doubles, and matched teammates Isaiah Lowe ‘22 and Jack Galbraith ‘20 with three RBIs each.
There is more than meets the eye to the final result. Saturday was the first meeting between the two programs since 2018 (a playoff game won in extra innings by the Buccaneers). Not only that, Christ School (1-1) scored all its runs before Charlotte Country Day (0-2) finally got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth inning.
The first of two doubles by Isaiah highlighted a five-run first inning. One batter later, Garrett blasted a home run to left field. The Greenies scored another run in the third inning and five more in the sixth.
Andrew Grande ‘21 drove in a run with a sacrifice fly. Players scoring runs for Christ School were Isaiah (three), Garrett (two), Charlie Bell ‘21 (two), Andrew (one), Michael Posse ‘22 (one), Parker Johnson ‘21 (one), and Mickey Meguiar ‘21 (one).
Jack was the winning pitcher – he threw 5.2 innings, allowing three runs (two earned) and two walks to go along with seven strikeouts. The senior also pitched four scoreless innings Tuesday, but Christ School could not hold on and lost its season opener to Asheville Christian Academy, 4-3.
Thursday’s game at Carolina Day could not be finished due to darkness. The Greenies are leading 12-8 in the fourth inning of a game that will be completed later this season.
Varsity baseball is again involved in the Florida League High School Invitational which lasts March 9-13. The majority of the games will be played in Sanford, Fla.
Christ School is on Spring Break until classes resume March 16.
