Josh Coley was not interested in nitpicking a 28-point win Tuesday night.

The coach firmly believes that Christ School varsity basketball can and will improve on the effort – a 70-42 home game with Charlotte's Victory Christian. Nine different Greenies scored in their 2022-23 season opener, led by double figures from Jamari Briggs ’24 (13 points), Emanuel Richards ’23 (11), and Keenan Wilkins ’24 (10).

“The little things – we bobbled some balls and didn't finish around the rim. That will come,” Coach Coley said.

“We had jitters. Everyone was nervous. For our seniors, it was their last first game. We were overexcited in the locker room beforehand, which is what you want to be. But as we continue to jell, get reps and get more shots, we’ll be fine. We’ll get over the hump.”

Christ School (1-0) was ahead, 13-7, at the conclusion of the first quarter and pushed the lead to 34-18 by halftime. The Greenies continued to pull away in the second half despite not having four players due to the NCISAA Division I state football playoffs or the flu.

The rest of the team’s scorers were Lleyton Thomas-Johnson ’24 (nine points), Anthony Robinson ’23 (nine), Cole Boyer ’24 (six), Bryson Cokley ’24 (five), Jo Ahart ’25 (four), and Ty Dixon ’23 (three).

JV Greenies 54, Victory Christian 43

Sophomores Will Sherrill ‘25 (15 points) and Jimmy Jones ‘25 (13) combined for 28 points Tuesday to lead the Christ School JV team to a win in its season opener.

The Greenies (1-0) held a 26-20 halftime lead and fought off every rally from the visiting Kings in the second half.

Christ School’s other scorers were James DeYoung ‘26 (eight points), Buck Duggins ‘25 (six), Brody Ballard ‘25 (four), Wells Edwards ‘25 (four), Drew Hykin ‘26 (four).
