Christ School varsity basketball needed someone to take control Saturday afternoon in Mebane Field House. Emanuel Richards ’23 went a little overboard.

The junior from Irmo, S.C., was officially credited with 37 points, including 14 of the team’s 16 points in overtime, as the Greenies put away Gaston Christian, 76-72.

Emanuel shot 57 percent from the field and was 10-for-12 at the foul line, with all those free throws coming after the teams had played to a 60-60 tie in regulation. Emanuel pulled down 10 rebounds, one fewer than Anthony Robinson ’23 (15 points, 11 rebounds).

The Greenies (2-0) led the Eagles (1-1) by as many as eight points in the first half only to trail for portions of the second. Gaston Christian was the NCISAA 3-A state runner-up last season and had the final possession of the second half Saturday, but a short floater rolled off the rim.

Christ School’s other scorers were Diego Rojas Bowe ’25 (eight points), Jozohn Price ’24 (eight), Johno Pierce ’23 (four), Zack Myers ’24 (two), and Bryson Cokley ’24 (two).

The next game for the Greenies is Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Cannon School.
