Can We Fool Our Own Sense of Taste? The Science of the Miracle Berry & the Genetics of Taste
Environmental Science Lab – L 15

Join Mr. Jack Lynch, our AP Biology and AP Environmental Studies teacher and the founder of the Climbing Program, for a sensory exploration! In this lesson, you will learn if your unique genetic makeup allows you to taste the bitterness in PTC paper and how this has been shown to influence broader health outcomes. Afterwards, you will dive into the science behind how flavor signals are transmitted from the tongue to the brain and how these signals shape your perception of the world. You’ll observe this firsthand by sampling miracle berries which have become world-renowned for their ability to affect how we taste different foods.

Music Center 

Chapel organist, choirmaster, and music teacher Jim Cassarino will present an engaging overview of our chapel hymnal and reveal how it is a depository and treasury of rich music from the Middle Ages all the way to the 20th century. Without knowing it, our students are meeting and engaging with music that spans centuries, genres, and cultures. Sharing many examples, Professor Cassarino will discuss how the hymnal incorporates Gregorian Chant, Lutheran chorales, British psalm tunes, Folk music, and American melodies. This is your chance to learn, listen, and sing, sing, sing!

Stolz Hall - Annex 2

In this student-led master class, the boys of the Robert Morgan '36 Aviation Program (with support from the program’s founder and Spanish teacher, Les Thornbury) will teach you the procedures for charting a flight plan using basic math and VFR sectional charts.  Following the lesson, your student instructors will demonstrate for you how to load your flight plan into our advanced Cirrus SR22T flight simulator so you can fly the route you planned and land at the destination airport of your choice. The spectacular, verdant Appalachians serve as a backdrop to our campus and the greater Asheville community. In cool hollows and on craggy peaks, unique elements of American culture have emerged and flourished. But how did these majestic mountains form? What geologic and tectonic forces conspired to shape them? Are they really the oldest mountains in the world? Is the French Broad River actually the third-oldest in the world? Come find the answers to these questions  and much more  in this engaging masterclass taught by Biology and Earth & Space Science teacher Matt Cole.
