Staring down a 3-1 halftime deficit, the afternoon looked like it was going one way for Christ School varsity soccer.

The Greenies cleaned up a few mistakes and kept pressing forward Saturday until they overtook Cannon School, 4-3.

Ashe Hamrick ’21 recognized everything about the scenario from practice.

He watched the quarterback’s eyes, broke on the ball, and seconds later had his first varsity touchdown.

Christ School varsity football won big as expected Friday in front of a Father-Son Weekend crowd at Fayssoux Field. However, there were a number of firsts and other highlights worth taking away from a 47-0 rout of the visiting Cabarrus Warriors, such as Ashe’s pick-six interception.

Varsity soccer got back on track Thursday afternoon with its third shutout of the year.

Fox Smith ‘21 and Luke Rheney ’21 scored goals off a pair of assists from a third junior, Carson Campbell ’21, and Christ School took a 2-0 win at Legacy Early College in Greenville, S.C.

In the past, Andrew Hammel ’20 and Joseph Visconti ’20 have always been a great 1-2 punch for Christ School cross country.

The Greenies proved there is way more in their arsenal Wednesday, winning the Buncombe County meet for the first time.

And now for 2^nd Lt. Marshall Plumlee ’11, he can add another title worthy of esteem – U.S. Army Ranger.

One mile is not a lot in the grand scheme of things. Christ School cross country runners will adhere to a training regimen with hundreds of miles between now and the end of their season in October.

But it was four laps around the school track that suggested this could be a special kind of season for the Greenies.

Christ School football’s steady rise has not gone unnoticed, both locally and beyond.

The program achieved another first Saturday by taking over the No. 1 position in the Asheville Citizen-Times’ weekly rankings for western North Carolina. Christ School (1-0) came into the season ranked No. 2 among the 31 private and public-school teams covered by the newspaper.  

Aydan White ’20 has been hauling in passes from his quarterback since the two were in elementary school.  

It shows.

Talent was always a given. What really intrigued Nick Luhm was the degree of leadership his senior class would bring into the 2019 season.

On both counts, Christ School’s first-year head football coach couldn’t be any happier.

Every single field player got into the game Wednesday, a point of pride for Christ School soccer coach Guy Campbell ’00.

The Greenies needed a collective effort and then some to win their Carolinas Athletic Association opener. Goals from Adam Keever ’20 and Jack Lee ’21 in the final 5 minutes and 38 seconds allowed Christ School to come from behind for a 3-2 win at Carolina Day.

Landon Archangelo ’15 can look back now and chalk up an injury as a mixed blessing.

For the third time in his career, Christ School alumnus Mason Plumlee ‘09 has been chosen to represent his country in an international basketball competition.

Outside of his studies at Christ School, Michael Mahoney ’20 has shown an interest in real estate. The senior is sure covering a lot of ground for an undefeated soccer team.

Faint thunder could be heard rumbling on the periphery of Christ School’s campus Thursday evening. Meanwhile, the Greenies were stirring up a little noise of their own in NCISAA 4-A soccer.

Guy Campbell ’00 does not care much for the perception that he has a young soccer team.

In fact, the coach believes that experience along with chemistry will be strong suits for Christ School this season.

Early Sports are in full swing at Christ School, as usual a reminder that summer is winding down and a new year of Greenie athletics is ready to begin.

Christ School rising senior Justice Ajogbor '20 had put himself on the national radar long before this summer. An invitation to the first-ever NCAA College Basketball Academy was a good confirmation of that.

Zack Myers ’23 is having a summer to remember on the track.

The rising freshman from Christ School became a national champion Tuesday at the USA Track & Field National Youth Outdoor Championships in Durham, N.C.

Christ School teams won a Carolinas Athletic Association conference championship in every spring sport, success that has been justly rewarded with the release of the Asheville Citizen-Times’ annual All-Western North Carolina teams.

"We are excited to have Coach Cioce take the reigns of a program that he has been a part of not only as a player, but also as a coach this past season," Thorp said. "Matt understands the expectations on the student-athletes as members of the Christ School community and his emphasis on discipline and skill development blends very well with his player-focused approach.
