Saturdays will be greener than ever this college football season.

Twenty-one alumni from Christ School are active at the next level, almost enough for a complete offense and defense.

Christ School varsity football’s schedule for 2023 is highlighted by opponents from four different states and both reigning NCISAA state champions: Charlotte Providence Day (Division I) and Asheville School (Division II).  

Greenville (S.C.) County Schools needed a 16th team for this weekend’s preseason jamboree and Christ School football was all too happy to answer the call.  

By and large, college football teams only bring their best or most respected players to preseason media events.

Aydan White ’20 can be classified as both.

Cayden Jones ’24 should come back from the Under Armour Next All-America Football Game with more free swag than he knows what to do with.

A new tradition served as the unofficial start to Christ School's 123rd Commencement Weekend on Thursday night.

Cayden Jones ’24 wasn’t looking for social media clout when he took a picture with Nick Saban in late January, a coffee table full of championship rings laid out before them.

The smile on Cayden’s face is because a visit to Tuscaloosa, Ala., had confirmed what he already knew – the very last scholarship offer in his recruiting was the only one he wanted.

Some linebackers have a nose for the ball. Wells Black ’90 had sonar his senior year at Christ School.

At the time, his 137 tackles were a school record. It wasn’t commonplace for Greenie football players to make the Asheville Citizen-Times All-Western North Carolina Team back then, but Wells did.

Josh Harrison ’24 looked forward to proving himself this summer at football camps across the country and watching more scholarship offers roll in.

Now he doesn’t have to, and he has no complaints.

Spring Break is a time to relax and reset for the remainder of the school year.

Khalil Conley ’24 had grander plans. And they involve a much bigger decision about his future.

Ups and downs are to be expected with any season, but Christ School football gave the school community some unforgettable moments in 2022 while battling injuries and other attrition.

Nearly one-fourth of Christ School’s Class of 2023 was seated at a long row of tables Monday morning with college paraphernalia spread all around.

An extraordinary year for Greenie athletics called for the vast space of Mebane Field House to hold a special all-school Assembly.

The numbers don’t lie and neither do the awards.

Both from an individual and team perspective, NCISAA Division I football elevates its stature every year.

Which means that in 2022 it takes more than ever to be considered among the best of the best. Christ School defenders Cayden Jones ’24, Josh Harrison ’24, and Zack Myers ’23 have each been voted by coaches to the NCISAA Division I all-state team.

Christ School varsity football overcame a lot this season. The Greenies had just as much going for them when they were 100 percent healthy, as evidenced by all-conference selections for the CISAA (Charlotte Independent Schools Athletic Association), voted on by league coaches. 

CHARLOTTE – Gutsy call for a gutsy team.

Coach Chad Walker burned a timeout to buy a few more seconds Friday. But everything in his mind was saying that Christ School needed to go for a 2-point conversion to win its NCISAA Division I state playoff game at Charlotte Latin, rather than extend overtime.

And after everything the coach saw his team overcome this week, he liked the odds even more.

Some Greenie was industrious enough to calculate how many days the Fayssoux-Arbogast Trophy has been in Christ School’s possession. Naturally, the next step was to write the number (4,018) on a banner hanging from the Young House dorm for all to see Saturday.
