Christ School's undefeated golf team claimed far and away its biggest win yet Friday, taking first place in the 16-team Wesleyan Christian Invitational Tournament at the Grandover Resort in Greensboro, N.C.

The Carolinas Athletic Association Tournament was a date with destiny for Christ School golf.

As the sun was setting Thursday over Springdale Country Club in Cruso, N.C., the heavily-favored Greenies were celebrating a conference championship.

Knowing the ins and outs of their home course surely helped.

But in the end, Christ School golfers simply made more shots than any other team Wednesday at Biltmore Forest Country Club.

Greenie golf is still undefeated this season after narrowly beating Charlotte Country Day, 304-305, in a dual match Wednesday at Biltmore Forest Country Club.

Monday was a good litmus test as to whether Christ School golf can win another Carolinas Athletic Association championship.

The results speak for themselves.

One match down, one win in the books.

Christ School golf opened its season Thursday with a 305-311 win over Metrolina Christian Academy at Rolling Hills Country Club in Monroe, N.C.

The Christ School Athletic Department is pleased to announce its Spring Sports Team Awards, as decided by the coaches.

Christ School outperformed expectations Monday at the NCISAA 4-A state golf tournament, placing fourth out of 12 teams at the Greensboro Country Club.

Christ School golfers worked tirelessly in the preseason and have seen it pay off with three consecutive wins. Time will tell if the Greenies can achieve the goal of playing their best when it matters most.

Golf did its part to uphold the Christ School athletic department’s winning streak over Spring Break, defeating Asheville Christian Academy in a match Wednesday at The Cliffs at Walnut Cove.

Uncertainty over COVID-19 nixed their 2020 spring sports seasons. And five Christ School student-athletes probably never imagined that one day their college signing ceremony would include masks and limited capacity.

Sam Brie ’21 (St. Bonaventure University lacrosse), Sean Dow ’21 (Lehigh University lacrosse), Andrew Graham ’21, (University of North Carolina Greensboro golf), Andrew Grande ’21 (Rice University baseball), and Keese Zugehoer (Lindenwood University lacrosse) basked in the spotlight all the same Wednesday with their families watching on.

For the second time in three years, Carson Ownbey ’18 and one of his teammates on the UNC Charlotte golf team made for a winning combination in the Carolinas Four-Ball Championship.

Competitive sports are slowly resuming and it is obvious that two Christ School golfers have been polishing their shot-making and putting during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Charles Howden ’22 (boys 16-18) and Jamal Hutchinson ’23 (boys 14-15) won their age divisions at the National Junior Golf Association Players Championship held Saturday and Sunday in Travelers Rest, S.C.

The sun peeked through the clouds at precisely the right moment Friday morning as family and friends gathered outside Stolz Hall for a signing ceremony. Henry Muller '20 will be continuing his golf career at Sewanee (Tenn.): The University of the South, making him the 19^th Greenie senior to commit or sign with a college sports program.

Today, the Christ School Athletic Department continues a week-long celebration of the Class of 2020’s spring sports athletes on our website and @greeniesports social media. Each day will be devoted to a different sport, with that coach reflecting on what the seniors meant to the program and the school.

With few exceptions, Christ School golf has been near the top of the leaderboard in every NCISAA state tournament played over the past decade. The program has won three state championships during that time (2010, 2012, and 2014) and been a runner-up on five occasions (2013, 2015, 2016, 2018, and 2019).

Recent tradition is one thing. Keeping it going is another. Coach Eric Thorp ’01 believes this year’s Greenies have the intangibles to be special.

The Christ School community gathered Wednesday to celebrate seven student-athletes who will be carrying on their careers at the college level.

An Early-Signing Period event recognized the following seniors and their commitments – Justice Ajogbor ’20 (Harvard University basketball), Cameron Akers ’20 (College of Charleston golf), Jack Fitch ’20 (University of Vermont lacrosse), Beau Hecimovich ’20 (High Point University lacrosse), Davis Lindsey ’20 (Loyola University Maryland lacrosse), Kevin Masson ’20 (Rollins College lacrosse) and Steve Pappas (Mars Hill golf).

Metaphorically speaking, Thomas Garbee ’16 is on the back-nine of his college golf career. And it is shaping up to be a great round.
