No less an authority than the only Greenie to ever play basketball for the University of North Carolina believes the Tar Heels are in good hands with Hubert Davis.

Returning to traditions has been an overarching theme this year at Christ School.  

Varsity basketball did not diminish the aura of “Christmas in the Greenie Dome” Tuesday night.

Take away 20.2 points per game and any offense will struggle to find its flow.

Christ School varsity basketball was affected greatly by the absence of leading scorer Emanuel Richards ’23 in the lineup Wednesday but fought through it.

Fallou Faye ’25 needed one quarter of game action to get acclimated Tuesday. After that, there was very little that Cannon School could do to stop the freshman wing. 

Christ School varsity basketball needed someone to take control Saturday afternoon in Mebane Field House. Emanuel Richards ’23 went a little overboard.

The junior from Irmo, S.C., was officially credited with 37 points, including 14 of the team’s 16 points in overtime, as the Greenies put away Gaston Christian, 76-72.

No team is a finished product in its season opener. And the opposition will undoubtedly get tougher as the season progresses.

But it was plain to see Tuesday why new coach Josh Coley has laid out such an ambitious schedule for Christ School varsity basketball in the months to come. 

Josh Coley sat back and smiled Tuesday as his assistants and players assured the coach that they could run a portion of the Christ School Basketball Camp on their own.

Coach Coley has been smiling a lot lately.

Combine the sheer expanse of Christ School's 500-acre campus, the quality of facilities, as well as Asheville's drawing power, and summer camps have returned in a big way. 

Josh Coley brings to Christ School a proven track record as an effective leader and winning coach. The school is confident that Mr. Coley will maintain our tradition of success as the Greenies’ new Varsity Basketball Coach.

Buying into the team concept has traditionally resulted in a lot of conference championship seasons for Christ School basketball. The group that took the floor for first-year coach Matt Cioce ’13 had no shortage of individual talent, too.

The Asheville Citizen-Times announced its All-Western North Carolina Team this week with recognition going to three Greenies – senior center/forward Justice Ajogbor ’20 and sophomore forward De’Ante Green ’22 are first-team picks, while junior point guard Drew Redmond ’21 received honorable mention.

Not many basketball teams would have been able to recover from an 0-7 start to the season. Much less go on to win a conference championship and reach the quarterfinals of the state playoffs.

Not many basketball teams in the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association had two players the caliber of De’Ante Green ’22 and Justice Ajogbor ’20.
