Whatever had been lacking in recent games for Christ School varsity lacrosse was back with a vengeance Tuesday.

The Greenies played with the utmost energy and precision, from the opening faceoff to the final whistle, to beat visiting Charlotte Providence Day, 9-4, in the semifinals of the NCISAA Division I state playoffs.

Ordinarily, it would be a big deal for a team to reach the Final Four. Christ School varsity lacrosse holds itself to a much higher standard.

Christ School lacrosse is a state-championship contender every year and has reached the mountaintop three times (2017, 2018, and 2019).

It wasn't always that way.

Everyone on Christ School varsity lacrosse’s sideline agreed that Saturday was the team’s finest moment so far this season.

Which means it was a proper Senior Day send-off for Sam Bassett '22, Charlie Bednar '22, Sawyer Breiter '22, Jack Britts '22, Nick Crowley '22, Nate Kelley '22, and Emmett Paradine '22.

Christ School varsity lacrosse is not accustomed to losing three games in a row. 

Four was never in the realm of possibility as Monday's game wore on. 

Carter Sherwood ’26 played well beyond his years, with the freshman winning 17 faceoffs.

Meanwhile, sophomore goalkeeper Lucas Little ’25 turned away shot after shot to finish with 11 saves.

Two new starters for Christ School varsity lacrosse did their jobs confidently and capably, allowing all the veterans to get a measure of revenge Friday by beating Charlotte Providence Day, 12-6, in a rematch of last year’s NCISAA Division I state championship game.

There is a lot of fight in this year’s Christ School varsity lacrosse team.

The Greenies (5-0) have fallen behind at some point in four of their five games this season. They are still undefeated for a reason.

Sam Bassett ’22 shook his defender and blasted a shot past the Cannon School goalkeeper in sudden-death overtime to lift the Greenies to a tense 10-9 win in the quarterfinals of the NCISAA Division I state playoffs.

Saturday offered Christ School varsity lacrosse one last chance to fine-tune things for the NCISAA Division I state playoffs. The Greenies did not flinch after a less than ideal start at Durham Academy.

Collin Schott ‘22 outscored Asheville School by himself Monday and had plenty of help in the first win of the season for Christ School JV Lacrosse.

Wednesday will surely not be the last home game of the season for Christ School varsity lacrosse, but the Greenies played with a keen sense of urgency on Senior Day.

Freshman attacker Tony Provenza ’24 scored the first of his career-high six goals just 53 seconds in and Christ School was off to the races for a 22-6 home win over Asheville School.
