Christ School’s Little Greenies began a new basketball season on a winning note Tuesday.

Eyob Gill ‘24 accounted for more than half of the team’s points with a game-high 15 in a 29-23 win at Asheville’s Reynolds Mountain Christian Academy. Eyob’s first field goal of the season was also the initial one for Christ School (1-0), which took a 17-7 halftime lead to its locker room.

The Christ School community gathered Wednesday to celebrate seven student-athletes who will be carrying on their careers at the college level.

An Early-Signing Period event recognized the following seniors and their commitments – Justice Ajogbor ’20 (Harvard University basketball), Cameron Akers ’20 (College of Charleston golf), Jack Fitch ’20 (University of Vermont lacrosse), Beau Hecimovich ’20 (High Point University lacrosse), Davis Lindsey ’20 (Loyola University Maryland lacrosse), Kevin Masson ’20 (Rollins College lacrosse) and Steve Pappas (Mars Hill golf).

Points in the paint are a key statistic for every basketball team, especially so for the first at Christ School to be coached by Matt Cioce ’13.

The highest-rated recruit in the history of Harvard University basketball is from Christ School.

Justice Ajogbor ’20 committed to the Crimson on Sunday, telling reporter Evan Daniels from 247Sports, “I’m deciding to play for the next four years at Harvard. Really for me the opportunity to play for coach (Tommy) Amaker, he's an awesome guy. The opportunity to go to a school like Harvard, is an opportunity I couldn’t pass up.”

And now for 2^nd Lt. Marshall Plumlee ’11, he can add another title worthy of esteem – U.S. Army Ranger.

For the third time in his career, Christ School alumnus Mason Plumlee ‘09 has been chosen to represent his country in an international basketball competition.

Christ School rising senior Justice Ajogbor '20 had put himself on the national radar long before this summer. An invitation to the first-ever NCAA College Basketball Academy was a good confirmation of that.

"We are excited to have Coach Cioce take the reigns of a program that he has been a part of not only as a player, but also as a coach this past season," Thorp said. "Matt understands the expectations on the student-athletes as members of the Christ School community and his emphasis on discipline and skill development blends very well with his player-focused approach.

For just the second time in school history, the Greenies basketball finished as the state runner-ups. Christ School finished as the runner ups in 2006, and on Saturday, after an amazing close the season, the Greenies fell to Greensboro Day School, 65-53 in the 4A NCISAA State Championship.

Two months ago the Greenies hosted Charlotte Christian and lost by 20 points. This past weekend, however, Christ School basketball won when it mattered most, defeating the #1 ranked Charlotte Christian squad, 52-45.

For the fourth time in as many tries, the Greenies defeated Rabun Gap in convincing fashion, this time by twenty two points. With a final score of 69-47, Christ School basketball will move on to the State Quarterfinals against number 1 ranked Charlotte Christian (24-1).

The Greenies Basketball team is Conference Champions once again after a fantastic team win on Saturday night at Asheville Christian Academy. After falling to the Lions twice in the regular season, Christ School defeated ACA, 65-53 to win the Conference Tournament and the conference crown.

JV basketball took on a very improved Legacy Charter team on Thursday night in Greenville, SC. After defeating the team early in the season, they came back with vengeance.

The Greenies welcomed the Blues of Asheville School on Tuesday evening in a basketball doubleheader. Christ School took both with the JV team winning 42-13 and Varsity winning 71-55.

The JV basketball team defeated Oakbrook Academy last night, 42 to 18. Nathaniel Carson lead the team with 9 points but overall, several Greenies had big games both offensively and defensively.

Though the Greenies started slowly in the first half, they were tied 21-21 at the half. Great defensive play in the second half led the Christ School JV to a 49-42 victory over Wesleyan Christian Academy on the road.
