For the fourth consecutive year, the Asheville Citizen-Times All-Western North Carolina Athlete of the Year for outdoor track is a Greenie.

Dawson Reeves ’24 broke out in a big way at last month’s NCISAA Division I Championship Meet. 

His performance over the course of two days at Cary Academy is still being rewarded. 

GREENSBORO – Watching someone as fit as Dawson Reeves '24 labor through the 2,000-meter steeplechase puts the race’s difficulty into perspective. 

Now consider that Friday was the first 90-degree day of 2024. 

EUGENE, Ore. - From a Greenie legend to a college All-American in the span of a year.

The Wake Forest University coaching staff is rightfully excited about the present and future with Christ School alumnus Rocky Hansen ’23 on their roster now. Rocky placed 16th in the 5,000-meter run (14:04.44) Friday night at the NCAA Outdoor Track Championship meet.  

WINSTON-SALEM - Eugene, Oregon has been affectionately called “Track Town USA” and the University of Oregon’s color scheme (green and yellow) matches with Christ School. 

You wouldn’t expect anything less than the stars to align for the site of Rocky Hansen’s first NCAA Championship meet. 

Rocky will run the 5,000 meters Friday at 10:55 p.m. on ESPN2, a phenomenal achievement for a true college freshman.  

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The champs keep champing. 

One of the main contributors to Christ School’s NCISAA Division I state championship raced for the first time since his graduation on Saturday. Luke Parrish ’24 did not let competition from all over the country or the Alabama heat phase him in winning the 2,000-meter steeplechase at the RunningLane Track Championships. 

CARY – Lleyton Thomas-Johnson ’24 needed a minute Saturday afternoon. He got about 5 seconds, give or take. 

The rest of the Christ School track team rushed over to the exhausted anchor leg of their 1,600-meter relay. Lleyton was on the ground, baton still in hand when he was picked up and launched into a sea of celebratory Greenies.

Congratulations to 30 spring sports athletes who were named to all-conference teams in the Carolinas Athletic Association. 

BLACK MOUNTAIN – Dawson Reeves ’24 got the baton Wednesday night with no realistic chance of catching Rabun Gap’s anchor leg in the 1,600-meter relay. 

Here’s the thing though. Several people near the exchange zone saw the 50-yard gap between the two runners and made a variation of the same remark – if anyone could do it, it would be Dawson. 

That’s the kind of belief that Dawson instills in himself and others on the Christ School track team and why the Greenies are a contender for this year’s NCISAA Division I state championship. 

With the conference meet looming in two weeks, Christ School track continues to round into championship form.

The Greenies were again the top team at a Carolinas Athletic Association meet Wednesday at Asheville School, stacking up 244 points to 179 from runner-up Rabun Gap (Ga.).

Back-to-back in one of the Southeast’s premier meets for distance running.

Congratulations to Christ School senior Dawson Reeves ’24 for repeating as the boys 1-mile champion Saturday at the Carolina Distance Carnival hosted by Weddington High School.

Symbolism on point: 24 college sports recruits from Christ School’s Class of 2024. 

Following an extended assembly Friday, boys taking part in Spring Signing Day were joined by their family and Greenie brothers for a ceremony in Mebane Field House. 

Christ School track’s depth was too much for four other boys teams at Wednesday’s meet hosted by Asheville High School. 

Duke recruit Dawson Reeves ’24 got his stiffest competition from his teammates in the 800-meter run (1:54.50) and 3,200-meter run (10:09.07), while the Greenies took first place in the meet’s final event, the 1,600-meter relay (3:31.35). 

Christ School track returned to the scene of last week’s season-opening win and got the same result. For the second Wednesday in a row, the Greenies were the clear winner of a meet at Asheville School. 

Good Friday, indeed!

Dawson Reeves ’24 began his Easter Break by winning the 3,200 meters Friday afternoon at N.C. State’s Raleigh Relays, running 9 minutes, 11.48 seconds. The Duke recruit was up against a stacked field that included NCISAA 4-A state cross country champion Tyler Surface of North Raleigh Christian (10th place, 9:21.74).

Christ School track and field won Wednesday’s four-team meet at Asheville School by 101 points with nine individual winners and two first-place relays.

Wednesday’s meet was the first of the outdoor season for the Greenies as a full squad.

Duke University recruit Dawson Reeves ’24 ran the sixth-fastest 2,000-meter steeplechase time in North Carolina history (6 minutes, 6.71 seconds) Saturday at the Spring Into the Season Kickoff track meet hosted by Metrolina Christian Academy.

Dawson Reeves ’24 had it covered Saturday at the Fast Track Invitational indoor track meet.

Everyone with a vested interest sees nothing but upside for the athletic future of Eyob Gill ’24.

Which would mean his college career will look very much like high school.
